Irish National Arrested in Hungary in Connection with US Nurse’s Death

Hungarian police have reported the apprehension of a 37-year-old Irish national concerning the homicide of a U.S. nurse. Mackenzie Michalski, aged 31, a resident of Portland, Oregon, was declared missing subsequent to an evening outing in Budapest, Hungary’s capital, on Tuesday. Law enforcement officials stated that the individual was identified via surveillance camera recordings and subsequently admitted to causing Ms Michalski’s death, though he asserted it was unintentional. A police statement issued on Saturday indicated that the man had endeavored to hide Ms Michalski’s demise by leasing a vehicle, placing her remains into a suitcase, and depositing it in a forested area close to the village of Szigliget, located in the western part of the country. Authorities reported that Ms Michalski died during an “intimate encounter” with the suspect, but refrained from disclosing additional specifics. They determined that the two had encountered each other at a nightclub, engaged in dancing, and then proceeded to the man’s leased apartment. He was taken into custody at that location on Thursday evening and has since been detained pending further proceedings. Following interrogation, the suspect indicated to detectives the site where he had concealed Ms Michalski’s body, according to the police statement. The statement further noted that the man had stored the nurse’s remains in a closet while he cleaned his apartment — in an effort to “remove traces” of the alleged murder — prior to driving to the woods. Friends reported Ms Michalski missing when she did not come back to their lodging. Throughout their inquiry, police stated they discovered findings that “gave rise to the suspicion of murder”. Subsequent to Ms Michalski’s disappearance, the man conducted multiple internet queries, such as “what does a dead body smell like after it decomposes?”, “how do the police handle missing person cases?”, and “removing rotting meat smell”. He reportedly also investigated whether pigs consume deceased bodies and information regarding the presence of wild boar along Lake Balaton, a body of water situated close to Szigliget. Video distributed by Hungarian law enforcement depicts a man in handcuffs leading officers through a forested area. Sniffer dogs and forensic investigators are visible. A Facebook group, named “Find Mackenzie Michalski,” indicates that the 31-year-old was frequently known as Kenzie. On Saturday, her friends organized a candlelit vigil near the U.S. embassy in Budapest.
