Larne swimmer Danielle Hill is among five Paris Olympians included in Ireland’s 13-member squad for the upcoming World Short Course Championships in Budapest next month. While Ireland’s Paris swimming medallists Daniel Wiffen and Mona McSharry will not compete, European 50m backstroke champion Hill will be joined in the 13-strong contingent by fellow Olympians Ellen Walshe, Tom Fannon, Shane Ryan, and Max McCusker. Olympic finalist Walshe is set to participate in the championships, scheduled for 10-15 December, having previously secured a silver medal at the 2021 World Short Course tests held in Abu Dhabi. Nathan Wiffen, brother of Daniel Wiffen, is also part of the Irish squad, alongside Northern Ireland swimmers Ellie McCartney and Lottie Cullen, who have also been selected. Additionally, the squad features John Shortt, who established a new Irish senior 200m backstroke record just last weekend. Swim Ireland’s national performance director, Jon Rudd, commented on the event, stating: “This event is a very individualised affair, with some athletes ready and raring to go again and others needing additional time to regroup and refresh after a hectic summer, particularly one which proved to be the best ever for Ireland in Olympic waters.” Rudd added, “Irish swimming is in great shape, brimming with confidence and this is a very exciting group of athletes to take into a Championships such as this as we build towards the 50m-pool version of the event in Singapore next summer.” The full Ireland World Short Course Championships squad comprises: Evan Bailey, Jack Cassin, Eoin Corby, Niamh Coyne, Lottie Cullen, Tom Fannon, Danielle Hill, Ellie McCartney, Max McCusker, Shane Ryan, John Shortt, Ellen Walshe, Nathan Wiffen.
