The “bauble tree,” an artistic LED Christmas tree in Ipswich, will not be reinstated for the upcoming festive season after sustaining damage in a storm last winter. This installation was first revealed on Cornhill in 2012, subsequently relocating to the Waterfront in 2017. The structure was toppled from its location adjacent to the University of Suffolk in January, an incident that occurred during Storm Henk. Jane Riley, who serves as the portfolio holder for culture and customers at Ipswich Borough Council, confirmed that the tree was “damaged beyond repair” and would therefore not be present for the forthcoming festive period. This information was initially reported by the Ipswich Star. She stated, “The bauble tree was a popular feature on the waterfront, but sadly it was damaged beyond repair in last winter’s storms.” Riley added, “Our focus will be on the town centre, with our Christmas lights switch-on taking place on the 17th November.” Composed of 41 aluminium spheres, the tree sculpture generated mixed reactions upon its initial unveiling.
