During the 2000-01 season, Ipswich Town’s nascent Premier League campaign received significant momentum from a 1-1 draw against Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. George Burley’s team quickly established an early lead thanks to Fabian Wilnis, and had several opportunities to secure a full victory, which were thwarted only by exceptional saves from goalkeeper Fabien Barthez. More than 24 years later, supporters of Town are likely hoping that Sunday’s remarkably similar encounter with United will result in a comparable outcome. The Blues’ point was well-deserved, as the match at Portman Road disrupted the media’s extensive focus on Ruben Amorim throughout the week. A victory for the 2024 squad was narrowly missed, prevented only by Andre Onana’s performance, which mirrored Barthez’s, in stopping Liam Delap’s attempts. It is evident that Kieran McKenna’s team is gaining positive momentum, with Sunday’s draw strengthening the perception that the “shock” outcome against Tottenham was not an isolated incident. Town demonstrated greater effort than Ange Postecoglou’s players (a factor that perhaps influenced Spurs’ performance at Manchester City!), and also largely surpassed Amorim’s hastily assembled United squad in work rate. However, this diligent effort must translate into wins. Following the United match, McKenna stated in his evaluation that, ideally, one or two of the preceding draws should have resulted in victories. As the Blues currently sit below the safety line, though only on goal difference, upcoming fixtures against teams such as Crystal Palace and Wolves require an increase in their win tally for their survival campaign to succeed. Burley’s team gathered 17 points from the 10 matches subsequent to their 1-1 draw with United in 2000, positioning them comfortably in seventh place. Given the tight standings in the lower half of the Premier League, it remains uncertain how far a comparable points haul could propel McKenna’s squad.
