A volunteer at a church cafe has announced plans to crochet for four hours daily during November. This effort is dedicated to the memory of his late grandfather, who succumbed to cancer. Mark Green, who resides in Ipswich, stated that he intends to create blankets and ponchos. These items will be sold at a charity shop, with proceeds benefiting the Bone Cancer Research Trust. The 45-year-old, who contributes his time at St Francis Church’s Peace Cafe, which serves the elderly, will additionally craft mini stockings. These stockings are slated for sale at the church’s upcoming Christmas fair. Mr. Green, who uses crocheting as a method to manage his anxiety and depression, commented: “It takes things off your mind and stops you worrying about stuff.” Mr. Green, who mentioned he typically crochets in the evenings while watching Big Brother, is undertaking this challenge to honor his grandfather, also named Mark, who passed away in his 80s. He explained that the family was unable to grieve adequately at the time, stating, “we were trying to be strong for our nan”. “Then when she died eight months later we were all in a big state,” he further elaborated. He added, regarding his motivation: “My dad got cancer as well so he always nags at me to wear a hat or make sure I have suncream on when I am in the sun – he is really scared that I might get it.“So, it’s a cause that is close to my heart.”
