Assessments have been conducted on trees designated for removal. Earlier this year, contentious proposals to remove 19 trees located in Infield Park, Barrow, Cumbria, were halted following opposition from local residents. The Westmorland and Furness Council had previously expressed worries regarding public safety due to the condition of irregular pavements. On Monday, excavation activities are scheduled to occur to determine the depth of other tree roots along the street; however, the council stated that these activities will not affect any trees. A petition to preserve the trees had garnered over 1,000 signatures, which contributed to the temporary cessation of the felling plans. Councillors are not expected to deliberate on whether the work should proceed until January. This follows preliminary work conducted last week, which involved excavating portions of the footway to ascertain the depth of the underlying tree roots. The council indicated that the results from these investigations will be used to shape a consultation, set to commence in January 2025, during which residents will have the opportunity to offer their input. The council further stated its interest in determining if resurfacing without tree removal could be considered a “possible safe and suitable long-term solution.” The authority also mentioned that the work scheduled for the upcoming week is anticipated to conclude within four days, necessitating road and footway closures throughout that period.
