A pre-inquest hearing was informed that evidence crucial to determining the cause of a gas explosion, which resulted in a man’s death, has been lost. Brian Davies, 68, was discovered in the debris following the blast on 13 March 2023, in Clydach Road, Morriston, Swansea. Three other individuals, including a 14-year-old boy, were transported to hospital. During a hearing at Swansea’s Guildhall, it was stated that insufficient evidence remained to establish the explosion’s origin, primarily due to the disruptive nature of the search and rescue operations. Harry Lambert, representing Wales and West Utilities, told the hearing that vital evidence had been “lost and contaminated.” He explained, “When Wales and West Utilities arrived on the scene, most of the relevant material and interior had been removed.” Mr. Lambert added that their investigator was “unable to perform any investigation on the possibility of gas having been leaked” because “JCB diggers and emergency vehicles were removing debris from the property in a search and rescue mission.” Mr. Lambert acknowledged that this immediate action was the “right thing to do,” as “it wasn’t known who was alive.” However, he also noted that this process meant the scene had been “extremely compromised.” Initially, Mr. Lambert stated, it was believed that the removed material had been stored at a recycling centre. He clarified, however, that “there were crossed wires,” and the material had, in fact, been “disposed of.” The full inquest, scheduled for early next year, will involve a jury and will focus on the circumstances surrounding Mr. Davies’s death, the hearing was informed. Mr. Lambert expressed his view that the jury would be unable to “reach a direct conclusion on the cause of the explosion.” In contrast, Coroner Aled Gruffydd disagreed, asserting, “it’s the one question that needs to be answered as part of this inquest.” Mr. Gruffydd further emphasized that while the inquest’s purpose “is not to blame,” it is “within the public interest to know what caused the explosion.” The hearing revealed that witnesses expected to testify at the inquest include neighbours, members of Brian Davies’s family, and representatives from the Health and Safety Executive, Wales and West Utilities, South Wales Police, and the fire service.
