An inquiry into fraud has commenced concerning allegations of bribery and corruption involving the aviation and defence company Thales. Officials in the United Kingdom and France confirmed they are conducting a collaborative investigation into the firm, recognized as a significant defence contractor for the government. This development follows office searches conducted in June by police forces in France, the Netherlands, and Spain, prompted by reported suspicions of corruption connected to international arms transactions. Thales UK, whose main office is located in Reading, Berkshire, employs over 7,000 individuals nationwide. On Thursday, the company was notified of the investigation by investigators from the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and the French agency Parquet National Financier. Nick Ephgrave, the Director of the SFO, stated: “Working collaboratively with our international partners is a crucial factor in the fight against international corruption.” He added, “We will together rigorously pursue every avenue in our investigation into these serious allegations.” Thales manufactured the 650 Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs), which the UK declared in September it would provide to Ukraine as part of a £162m procurement. Furthermore, in February, the company secured a £1.8bn UK defence contract, committing it to the maintenance of the Royal Navy’s ships and submarines for the upcoming 15 years. A spokesperson for Thales commented: “Thales confirms that the SFO and the PNF have commenced an investigation in relation to four of its entities in France and the UK.” The spokesperson continued, “Thales is co-operating with the PNF in France and the SFO in the UK. The group complies with all national and international regulations.” They concluded, “As the investigation is ongoing, Thales will not comment further.” The company additionally maintains facilities in Belfast, Bristol, Cheadle Heath in Cheshire, Crawley in West Sussex, Doncaster, Ebbw Vale, Glasgow, Reading, and Templecombe in Somerset.
