A recent report indicates “encouraging evidence of progress” at a correctional facility, HMP Five Wells, even as it noted a 27% rise in the documented rate of self-harm incidents among its prisoners. This institution, located in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, commenced operations in 2022 and is managed by the security company G4S. His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) observed that personnel “had gained confidence” and a greater number of inmates were “engaged in purposeful activity.” However, the inspectorate also pointed out that “not enough was being done to address violence or bullying” within the category C facility. G4S expressed that it was “pleased” with HMIP’s acknowledgment of “the progress we’ve made, particularly in relation to purposeful activity and staff-prisoner relationships.” The firm stated: “We are continuing to make improvements in key areas, including reducing self-harm incidents by bolstering support through the introduction of a peer mentor scheme, and a new induction process which sees fellow prisoners help new arrivals to settle in.” Furthermore, G4S mentioned that it had updated its method for analyzing self-harm incidents to enhance its safety strategy at the prison, which accommodates approximately 1,700 male inmates. During the prison’s previous inspection in January, it was reported that illicit drugs were readily accessible and that staff were not adequately supporting inmates. Nevertheless, the most recent inspection, conducted from 4 to 6 November, determined that the appointment of a new prison director was “providing clear direction.” The inspection identified “good progress” concerning health, wellbeing, social care, and staff-prisoner relationships. Additionally, the report noted “reasonable progress” in fostering positive behavior and in the prison’s leadership. Conversely, the areas of suicide and self-harm prevention, along with fair treatment and inclusion, were assessed as having achieved “insufficient progress.” HMIP observed that the documented rate of self-harm had increased by 27% since the previous inspection and continued to be the highest among comparable institutions. While no self-inflicted deaths have occurred since the prison’s opening, the past six months saw 26 serious self-harm incidents, with investigations completed for only 14 of these. The segment of the report dedicated to education, skills, and work, compiled by Ofsted inspectors, indicated “reasonable progress” across four distinct areas.
