An inquest into an attack at a well-known Sydney shopping center revealed that Joel Cauchi fatally stabbed six individuals and injured an additional ten within a mere three-minute period during his rampage. On Tuesday, the New South Wales Coroner’s Court was informed that Cauchi, aged 40, had a fixation with knives and a schizophrenia diagnosis. However, he had ceased taking his medication and was experiencing homelessness when the incident occurred. Furthermore, the inquiry learned that the center’s alarm system did not activate until after police had fatally shot Cauchi. The event on 13 April deeply impacted Australia, a nation where mass murders are uncommon, and initiated a nationwide discussion concerning gendered violence. In total, 14 of the 16 individuals stabbed on that day were female, encompassing five of the six fatalities and a nine-month-old infant. The NSW police commissioner stated then that it was “obvious” Cauchi had targeted women. The hearing on Tuesday outlined the key areas for an extensive inquiry scheduled to commence fully in April 2025. This investigation will examine potential security failures and deficiencies within the mental health systems of NSW and Queensland, Cauchi’s home state. Dr Peggy Dwyer SC, counsel assisting the coroner, testified in court that Cauchi had not been taking his psychotropic medication since 2019, even though authorities had received repeated warnings about his declining condition. She further noted that Cauchi had come “to the attention” of Queensland police on multiple occasions. Dwyer’s statement also presented the initial comprehensive timeline detailing the progression of the violence in Bondi on the day of the incident. She explained that Cauchi, who had been sleeping rough in the Maroubra suburb on the morning of the attack, entered Westfield shopping centre around 15:30 (local time) and, approximately three minutes later, after taking out his knife while in line at a bakery, commenced stabbing individuals. His initial victim was Dawn Singleton, 25, succeeded by Jade Young, 47, and Yixuan Cheng, 25. Subsequently, he assaulted Ashlee Good, 38, from behind. The court was informed that Good, whom her family characterized as an “all-round outstanding human,” then witnessed Cauchi stabbing her nine-month-old baby girl in her pram and sustained additional injuries while attempting to rescue the child. Faraz Tahir, a 30-year-old security guard, was then stabbed along with a colleague. Witnesses at the scene reported that he perished “trying to save others.” Cauchi then fatally stabbed Pikria Darchia, 55, before being shot dead by NSW Police Inspector Amy Scott, who was on duty nearby. The court heard that slightly more than a minute elapsed between Inspector Scott’s arrival and her killing of Cauchi. The entire attack spanned five minutes and 43 seconds, yet no alarm was activated throughout this duration. Dwyer stated, “It’s presently unclear why it took so long for the alarm to sound.” Prior to commencing the hearing, state coroner Teresa O’Sullivan acknowledged the ongoing pain and loss experienced by the wider community due to the violence. According to the Guardian Australia, she addressed the court, saying, “I offer my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones who are here in court today as well as those who can’t be here in person.” She added, “It’s important to me and my assisting team… that you feel safe, you feel heard and you feel cared for throughout this proceeding.” Post navigation Amsterdam Police Announce Five Additional Arrests Following Post-Football Match Violence Elderly Pedestrian Dies Months After Maidstone Car Collision
