An investigation has been initiated by the police oversight body after a woman passed away while in detention in Nottingham. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) reported that the 34-year-old woman was discovered unresponsive in a cell at the Radford Road custody suites around 22:30 GMT on October 31. She had been apprehended the day before and was being held in custody for a court appearance, having been charged with shop theft. The IOPC indicated that “life-saving attempts” were made, but she was pronounced dead at 23:12, which prompted a mandatory referral from Nottinghamshire Police. The watchdog confirmed it is examining the interactions the force had with the woman prior to her death. Derrick Campbell, IOPC regional director, stated: “Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and loved ones, as well as all those affected by her death.” He added: “As she was in police custody when she became unwell, we are required to carry out an investigation into the circumstances and that will include looking at the actions and decisions of the police officers and staff involved.” Campbell further commented: “We will keep the woman’s family and Nottinghamshire Police updated on our progress.”
