An investigation by the council has commenced following the conversion of a Grade II listed pub in Coventry into a supermarket, reportedly without the required planning permission. New signage has been installed on the exterior of The Oak Inn on Gosford Street, which ceased operations as a pub after relinquishing its licence two months ago. Coventry City Council stated it had not received any applications from the establishment that would permit a change in its use. A spokesperson confirmed, “Officers have visited the site, and the matter is currently under investigation.” This transformation occurs several months after a review into the former pub’s licence was launched, prompted by repeated reports of noise nuisances. Given the building’s listed status, any modifications to the pub, whether internal, external, or concerning its operational purpose, must secure authorization from the council. Carrying out work on a listed building without permission can constitute a criminal offence, and the council is empowered to prosecute if work is performed illegally. A council spokesperson reiterated: “To date no applications have been received for the works recently undertaken at the property. “Officers have visited the site, and the matter is currently under investigation’.” The Oak Inn has been contacted for comment.
