An inquest has been informed that a teenage driver and his companion lost their lives in a vehicle collision subsequent to consuming alcohol at a birthday gathering. Joseph Walsh, aged 19, had obtained his driving license five months before the deadly crash occurred on Brow Lane in Shelf, Halifax, on 20 October 2023. Tobias Barraclough, 18, a friend of Walsh, was positioned on the laps of two other friends in the vehicle’s rear section and succumbed to his injuries at a hospital several weeks thereafter, according to testimony at the inquest held at Bradford Coroner’s Court. The proceedings revealed that both individuals had been drinking at a public house prior to entering the car with the intention of traveling to a friend’s residence. Joseph, also referred to as Joe, had consumed cocaine preceding his demise, as disclosed during the inquest on Tuesday. Joe and Tobias, known by their nicknames Joe and Toby respectively, had participated in a birthday festivity at the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Halifax, consuming beverages between 18:45 and 23:00 BST. Testimony presented to the court indicated that Joe was thought to have consumed four or five pints of lager at the establishment before transporting four friends to one of their residences for a party. It was also noted by the court that none of the occupants in the rear seating area of the vehicle were utilizing a seatbelt. Upon entering Brow Lane, Joe accelerated to 40mph (64km/h), which was double the posted speed limit, before colliding with a stone wall. Joe sustained instant fatal injuries, while Toby passed away on 12 November 2023 at Leeds General Infirmary. Commemorative statements from the families of both men were presented during the inquest. Glen, Toby’s father, stated that his son “was our absolute world”. He further mentioned that Toby’s “boisterous and energetic character made him very popular” and that he was highly regarded by his co-workers during his welding apprenticeship. Lisa, Joe’s mother, commented that her son possessed a “brilliant sense of humour and always put a smile on everyone’s faces”. She added, “He loved nothing more than being with his friends.” “He paid the ultimate price for that bad decision and it breaks our hearts that Joe and Toby didn’t get a second chance to learn from that,” she concluded. Joe was employed as an apprentice bricklayer, and a Joseph Walsh memorial award has since been established in his honor for the young apprentice of the year at his former workplace. The coroner officially determined the cause of the men’s fatalities to be injuries sustained from a road traffic collision.
