A baby girl, born after her mother’s fatal fall from the ninth floor of a tower block, has been discharged from the hospital. The infant was delivered by C-section on 22 October, following the death of her heavily pregnant mother, Emma Atkinson, who fell from a flat in Shakespeare Towers, located in the Burmantofts area of Leeds. A court was informed that the baby, who had initially been in a critical condition, had made “miraculous” progress and was now being bottle fed instead of tube fed, due to her improving state. The court was also informed that the child, who was discharged on Monday, had “improved to a far greater extent than anyone dared to hope”. Documents presented to the court described the baby’s recovery as “both unexpected and much welcomed”. However, these documents also indicated that the impact of “any brain damage” suffered by the girl would need to be assessed following the “passage of time”. West Yorkshire Police confirmed that Ms Atkinson, a mother-of-five, was in the late stages of pregnancy at the time of her death following the incident. An inquest into her death began on 30 October and is set to be reopened at a later date.
