A total of 20 years in prison has been imposed on two individuals following a knife assault on an unknown person at a Kent railway station. Lewis Day, aged 26, residing at Hereson Road, Ramsgate, and Daryl Brown, 33, from Westgate-on-Sea, assaulted the victim, having erroneously concluded he was attempting to purloin a mobile phone belonging to one of their companions at Whitstable station. Proceedings at Canterbury Crown Court on Monday resulted in Day receiving a sentence of 14 and a half years, while Brown was given three and a half years. Upon his eventual release, Day is also mandated to serve an additional three years under licence. The individual who was attacked, identified as a man in his 50s, was situated on the platform across from Day, Brown, and a female acquaintance on December 16, 2023. Day proceeded to collect a mobile phone that his female friend had forgotten, which the victim then passed to him. Brown misinterpreted this action as an attempt by the victim to steal the device and consequently threw a beer can at him, an object the victim then returned. Day and Brown pursued the man away from the station premises, apprehended him within an alleyway, and subjected him to multiple stabbings. Subsequently, the two assailants engaged in an altercation between themselves, after which Day boarded a train while Brown and the woman remained in Whitstable. A member of the public, whose attention was drawn by the dispute, discovered the injured party and summoned assistance, leading to the arrests of both Brown and Day a short time later. Detective Constable Matthew Burridge commented, stating: “These two men seemed completely unconcerned about leaving the victim to die, and it is perhaps only thanks to the intervention of a member of the public that we are not dealing with a fatal assault.” He further described the incident as: “This was a horrific attack on a man who had attempted to help a friend of the two offenders.” Burridge concluded by saying: “The assault will obviously have a long-term impact on the victim and his family, but I hope the knowledge that these two men have been taken off the streets of Kent gives him some relief.” For further engagement, BBC Kent is accessible on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
