Individual Sentenced for Violent Knife Attack in Peebles

An individual received a five-year prison sentence for perpetrating a prolonged knife assault in the Borders region, an incident that occurred after he had consumed a combination of alcohol and illicit substances. Glenn Todd used a kitchen knife to stab his victim eight times in the back and also caused an additional injury to the victim’s temple following an altercation. The 25-year-old, whose previous residence was in Hawick, initially faced charges of attempted murder against Gavin Murray at a property in Peebles in July 2021. Nevertheless, the Crown accepted his guilty plea to a reduced charge of assaulting his victim, causing severe injury and endangering life. During proceedings at the High Court in Edinburgh, Judge Norman McFadyen informed Todd that he had perpetrated an offense characterized by “significant violence using a dangerous weapon.” The judge further stated, “Clearly a custodial sentence is inevitable.” In delivering the sentence, the judge noted Todd’s age at the time the offense occurred and his immaturity, but also remarked that it was “troubling” that, at 25 years old, he still exhibited minimal signs of maturity. The court mandated that Todd would undergo an additional three-year period of community supervision, during which he would be subject to a license and could face re-incarceration if he failed to comply with its terms. Testimony presented in court indicated that Todd was temporarily residing at the Peebles residence when Mr Murray arrived. Following the consumption of drugs and alcohol, an argument erupted between the two individuals, leading Todd to employ the weapon to stab his victim, piercing both lungs. Bystanders observed Mr Murray stumbling in the street and proceeded to attempt to control the bleeding before contacting emergency medical services. It was disclosed in court that Todd, who has received diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder and ADHD, possessed a criminal history dating back to 2016, encompassing prior convictions for assault. Subsequent to his arrest after the assault, he confessed to law enforcement during an interview that he had stabbed Mr Murray, though he asserted that his actions were in self-defense. Defence counsel Gail Gianni stated that Todd frequently struggled to manage his conduct when intoxicated by drugs and alcohol. She further explained that he had a prolonged history of substance abuse, which began with cannabis experimentation at an early age and progressed to him using heroin “every other day” approximately seven years prior.
