An Indian ride-hailing platform has issued an apology following a customer’s claim of being robbed at gunpoint by one of its drivers close to Delhi, the capital. The 30-year-old woman reported that on Saturday, while she was riding in a BluSmart taxi with her six-year-old son, the driver brandished a firearm. According to her police statement, he compelled her to transfer 55,000 rupees ($650; £513) to him using a mobile application before making her exit the vehicle. The driver has subsequently been apprehended. BluSmart stated on Tuesday that it was “deeply saddened and disturbed” by the event and had extended an apology to the woman’s family. BluSmart operates as a widely used ride-sharing application within the capital region and its surrounding areas. Established in 2019, its vehicle fleet consists entirely of electric vehicles. The service attracts numerous devoted patrons who express a preference for these taxis, citing them as more modern and hygienic compared to those offered by competing services. Many customers expressed their astonishment upon hearing about the robbery. The customer recounted that she had utilized BluSmart for a journey from a shopping centre in Gurugram, an affluent Delhi suburb, to her residence located several kilometres distant. A spokesperson for Gurugram police indicated that she alleged the driver compelled them to exit the car after the money transfer and then departed the location with her suitcase. The driver was apprehended the following day, subsequent to the woman providing the taxi’s registration details. Law enforcement officials stated that the suspect appeared in court and was placed in police custody pending additional inquiry. Anmol Singh Jaggi, co-founder of BluSmart, conveyed in a post on X that the incident felt “personal.” He further stated on X, previously known as Twitter, “Safety is our foundation.” Jaggi affirmed that the company’s “exhaustive documentation process” coupled with prompt intervention from its “Quick Response Team” had led to the driver’s capture within 24 hours of the occurrence. In a statement released on Tuesday, the company declared, “We have stringent onboarding processes, including mandatory background checks, face-to-face interviews, and driving tests.” BluSmart also mentioned that its platform incorporates facial recognition technology for verifying driver identities and offers a safety helpline for its users. Nevertheless, the husband of the woman who was robbed informed the Indian Express newspaper that “she did not get time to sound an alarm as the driver suddenly pointed the gun” at her. BluSmart indicated that it was implementing measures to reinforce its safety protocols and deliver supplementary training to its drivers. The company further stated its dedication to furnishing the impacted family with “all necessary support.” Police confirmed that an investigation is underway to retrieve the stolen funds and the firearm purportedly utilized by the suspect.
