Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has denounced the “cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats” amidst an escalating diplomatic dispute with Canada. Both nations mutually expelled senior diplomatic representatives last month after Canadian officials alleged India’s involvement in violent actions against Indian dissidents on Canadian soil, an accusation India denies. Modi’s remarks followed an outbreak of violence at a Hindu temple in the Canadian city of Brampton on Sunday, which he labeled a “deliberate attack”. “Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve. We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law,” he posted on X. Authorities stated that three individuals have so far been apprehended and indicted in connection with the event in Brampton, near Toronto, but withheld additional information. The police service indicated that “several acts of unlawfulness continue to be actively investigated” by its officers. Unverified video footage circulated online reportedly depicted individuals carrying yellow flags of the Khalistan movement – which advocates for an independent Sikh state in India – engaging in confrontations with others holding Indian flags. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that “extremists and separatists” were responsible for the violence, urging the Canadian administration to “ensure that all places of worship are protected from such attacks”. The North America-based activist group Sikhs for Justice, conversely, characterized the incident as an “unprovoked violent attack on peaceful pro-Khalistan demonstrators”. Justin Trudeau posted on X that Sunday’s violence was “unacceptable”, further stating that “every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely”. The relationship between India and Canada has deteriorated since Ottawa implicated the Indian government in the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a naturalized Canadian citizen designated a terrorist in India. India has strongly refuted these and additional accusations and asserted that Canada has presented no proof to substantiate its claims. Mr. Nijjar had been an outspoken proponent of the Khalistan movement and advocated for it openly. The growing divide between Canada and India has prompted concerns regarding its potential effects on the extensive commercial and migratory connections between both countries. Trade between the two nations amounts to billions of dollars, and approximately 1.7 million individuals of Indian heritage reside in Canada. As of now, neither nation has implemented tariffs or alternative economic punitive measures, but analysts warn that this situation might evolve, and that a deteriorating relationship between India and Canada could impede future economic expansion.
