An independent safety audit has determined that phone masts in Jersey emit safe levels of radiation. The Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA), responsible for commissioning this audit, reported that all 19 sites examined registered “well below” international safety limits. Freshwave conducted these tests in September, assessing masts belonging to all mobile phone operators on the island. This included eight locations that had not undergone prior testing. Robin Hogge, who serves as the JCRA’s technical case officer, stated that the audit served as evidence of efforts to ensure the island’s telecommunications sector is “safe and well regulated.” The JCRA noted that the two locations recording the highest emission levels, the Sand Street and Kensington Place car parks, were tested during the Jersey International Air Display, an event that led to elevated usage. Mr Hogge also mentioned that the audit scheduled for next year will be the initial assessment to include the island’s forthcoming 5G masts.
