The effective date for prohibiting the sale and provision of single-use vapes within Northern Ireland has been postponed by two months. Environment Minister Andrew Muir had previously indicated an intention to implement the ban starting April 2025; however, on Wednesday, he announced that the prohibition would now commence on 1 June. This revised commencement date aligns with forthcoming legislation currently being formulated independently by the Scottish, Welsh, and UK governments. Mr. Muir stated that synchronizing these dates would offer enhanced clarity for commercial entities involved in the sale of single-use vapes. “The environmental damage created by the rise in the littering and incorrect disposal of used vapes, as well as their poor recyclability, is a key concern for me,” he said.”Single use vape waste can have a devastating impact on our environment and biodiversity and I welcome this ban which will have better benefits for our environment and consequently for our general health and well-being.” Businesses will be afforded an opportunity to prepare for this regulatory shift by liquidating any current inventory of single-use vapes. Throughout this transitional phase, the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (Daera) plans to collaborate with retail organizations to ensure that all affected parties comprehend the prohibition and their updated obligations. Comprehensive UK-wide guidance for businesses is currently under development and is slated for publication on Daera’s website later in December. The forthcoming legislation will stipulate criminal penalties, which could include a maximum sentence of up to two years’ imprisonment along with a fine. An estimated five million single-use vapes are discarded weekly across the UK, instead of undergoing recycling processes. A 2023 UK government consultation revealed that 90.4% of individual participants from Northern Ireland concurred with the necessity for restrictions on the sale and supply of single-use vapes, with 84.9% specifically advocating for these restrictions to manifest as an outright ban on their sale and supply.
