Multiple businesses in Goole were the site of a seizure involving thousands of counterfeit cigarettes, along with illicit tobacco and vaping products. On October 24, four retail establishments were targeted by a joint operation conducted by East Riding of Yorkshire Council trading standards and police, prompted by the sale of illicit tobacco and vape items. During the operation, officials discovered 440 vaping devices, 22,500 cigarettes, and over 22 pounds (10 kilograms) of hand-rolling tobacco. Councillor Lyn Healing commented, stating: “Illegal tobacco is often unsafe and linked to organised crime. I encourage all residents to report any such activity to the relevant authorities.” These tobacco products, valued at £14,500 at retail and located with assistance from detection dogs, were identified as counterfeit, hazardous, and in violation of numerous tobacco product regulations and the Trademarks Act 1994. This enforcement action formed part of Operation CeCe, a national program designed to combat the sale and distribution of illicit tobacco. Similar operations were also conducted at locations in Hessle and Hedon. The East Riding of Yorkshire Council reported that officers are currently investigating these infractions and will determine appropriate enforcement measures in time. Individuals convicted of selling illicit tobacco could face fines reaching £10,000 or potential imprisonment.
