A resident reported feeling “terrified” following a gas explosion that demolished a house on her street. The incident, which occurred on Ley Street in Ilford, east London, on Tuesday evening, propelled debris onto the thoroughfare and ignited a substantial blaze within the mid-terraced residence. The London Fire Brigade extracted two individuals from a first-floor window; they are currently hospitalized with injuries described as non-life threatening. Isobel Rowland, 73, residing across from the structure, stated: “The flames were so high, I was terrified, I was shaking, I was absolutely shaking.” Mrs Rowland initially perceived a loud noise and presumed it was a vehicular collision, but upon inspection, she observed the dwelling—which had been reconfigured into flats—engulfed in flames. She indicated that “quite a few” residents occupied the premises, among them a mother and son. The explosion obliterated the roof, and a significant portion of the remaining edifice, encompassing the ground floor, first floor, and a loft conversion, was consumed by the subsequent fire. The detonation also inflicted damage upon two adjacent properties. A contingent of eight fire engines and approximately 60 firefighters were dispatched to Ley Street shortly after 16:00 GMT, with the conflagration brought under control by approximately 18:30. The LFB reported that during the peak intensity of the blaze, the first floor and the loft conversion were “fully alight.” The origin of the gas leak remains subject to investigation.
