Kahir Shahin Hussain has been locally identified as the man who died after being struck by a falling tree during Storm Darragh. Mr. Shahin’s death occurred on Saturday around 15:00 GMT when a tree collapsed onto a vehicle on Sutton Road in Erdington, Birmingham. Birmingham city councillor Majid Mahmood confirmed Mr. Shahin’s identity as the victim in a post on X, extending his thoughts and prayers to the family. West Midlands Police stated that the matter has been referred to the coroner. Local residents described their shock following the event. Hafiz Khalid reported hearing a “big bang” and his daughter’s scream as she observed the scene from a window. He noted that a “big chunk” of the tree had landed across the car’s windscreen. “People were trying to open the doors,” Khalid recounted, also mentioning that the vehicle’s horn was sounding continuously. He further stated, “The police arrived and they opened the back window on the left side, and looked into it and shouted ‘can you hear?’ and there was no noise from [inside] the car.” Sgt Benjamin Parsons, from the West Midlands roads policing unit, confirmed that the victim’s next of kin have been notified.
