Highways authorities have announced a one-year postponement for significant road construction in Hull’s city centre, attributing the delay to “extremely challenging ground conditions.” The Castle Street project, a £355 million redesign, entails lowering the A63’s elevation to construct an underpass. While initial plans projected completion by April 2025, those overseeing the highways project now anticipate finishing by spring 2026. A spokesperson stated, “We have encountered some extremely challenging ground conditions near the Humber that could not have been anticipated before the scheme began.” National Highways issued a statement, saying: “Although we have continued to work at pace, it has unfortunately become clear that these unexpected conditions mean that we will not be able to hit our previously published open to traffic date of spring 2025.” They added, “We recognise the disruption caused since the scheme began, and we’re extremely grateful to everyone for their patience.” Responding to the announcement, Mike Ross, leader of Hull City Council, described the situation as “deeply disappointing.” He further stated, “I’m calling on National Highways to immediately reassure road users about the scheme going forward. I’m also calling for them to provide a business relief package for businesses who will be impacted by this alarming delay.”
