A historic train platform located within a park in Leicester has been restored as part of a broader £1.8 million revitalization project for the area. This feature, situated in Rally Park, previously formed a section of West Bridge station, which served passengers on the Leicester to Swannington line until its service concluded in 1928. The station buildings were demolished in 1979; however, a platform and some track remained when the site was converted into the park, adjacent to Tudor Road. The council indicated that it undertook this work to commemorate the railway heritage of the locality. Railway pioneer Robert Stephenson engineered the Leicester to Swannington Line, which commenced operations in 1832, with the purpose of transporting coal from mines in north west Leicestershire to the city. While the line primarily carried freight, some passenger carriages were attached to trains. Nevertheless, the original West Bridge Station lacked a platform, requiring travelers to disembark trains using ladders and handrails. A purpose-built station was erected in 1893. The council stated that the newly restored platform has been integrated into a cycle path. It also mentioned that work is ongoing for a scheme to establish new walking and cycling routes, enhance park entrances, and install additional street furniture, updated lighting, and new planting. Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, commented: “This ambitious scheme will help remove barriers to active travel in Rally Park, creating a more family and child-friendly route in the heart of a thriving neighbourhood.” Readers can follow BBC Leicester on Facebook, X, or Instagram.
