An exceptionally large pumpkin, cultivated by an individual on his allotment, is now available for visitors to a pumpkin patch to estimate its weight. Ben Rayner, a resident of Highbridge in Somerset, is responsible for growing this pumpkin, which measures approximately three feet in height and has a diameter comparable to that of a standard wooden pallet. The pumpkin is currently on display at Westcroft Farm in Berrow, where the public can participate in a weight-guessing competition for an unconfirmed prize. Mr. Rayner stated, “The farm will have the flesh of the pumpkin for their animals and the seeds I will keep back and give away to people around the area to encourage more of this.” Mr. Rayner also mentioned his involvement in a community dedicated to growing giant vegetables, a detail initially reported by Burnham-on-Sea.com. He elaborated, “Everyone swaps seeds but it’s not something you’d see in your local garden centre.” “I’ve done giant onions and giant tomatoes before,” he added. He attributed his ability to cultivate large vegetables to the abundant water supply available in the Somerset Levels. Mr. Rayner commented, “There’s a lot of feeding and tending to it, making sure there’s no weeds involved but to be honest, they would look after themselves if you left them to it.” He further explained, “Our allotments at Forge Rhyne Allotments are all organic, so we feed them horse manure and seaweed, things like that.” The pumpkin was planted by Mr. Rayner in March and was recently harvested. Initially, he intended to donate the pumpkin to a children’s cancer charity in Dorset; however, their Halloween party was canceled. Consequently, he provided it to Westcroft Farm, which reported “a lot of interest” in the pumpkin.
