An individual was observed viewing a pornographic video while operating a 44-tonne heavy goods vehicle (HGV). This driver was among 220 motorists stopped by Suffolk Police on the A14, A12, and A1 motorways, as part of a road safety initiative conducted between October 28 and November 1. Separately, another person operating an HGV laden with fuel was found smoking inside the cab, an act that police characterized as “sheer stupidity”. Tim Passmore, Suffolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner, stated: “The highlighted case of the man watching a video will shock people I’m sure. I am just glad officers were able to identify this madness and deal with the drivers accordingly.” Suffolk Police received an HGV tractor unit from National Highways to facilitate patrols across the county. This led to the detection of 250 offences, with 81 HGVs and 51 smaller goods vehicles being pulled over. Over the course of the five days, 83 individuals were found not wearing a seat belt, 37 were using a mobile phone, 21 had an insecure load, and 15 were driving without due care and attention. Additionally, six people disregarded a red light, and four were stopped for not maintaining proper control of their vehicle. Five graduated fixed penalty notices were issued, resulting in total fines of £700. Furthermore, 14 individuals received verbal warnings, and two vehicles were impounded due to a lack of insurance. Law enforcement officers also apprehended two individuals on suspicion of drug-driving. For updates on Suffolk news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X. Copyright 2024 BBC.
