A market town will see the return of its post office, precisely two years following the branch’s closure. The Post Office stated that “quite a few obstacles” had affected the reopening of the facility located within the Costcutter store in Helmsley. The branch, which ceased operations in the same location in 2022, is scheduled to resume trading on 26 November. Subsequently, a temporary post office counter operating at the adjacent Black Swan Hotel will cease service. The initial reopening date had been set for July, but subsequent delays caused it to be postponed. Mark Gibson, the Post Office manager for the north of England, commented: “When it first shut back in November 2022, it was quite short notice and was sort of dropped on us, so we were just left with this closure and therefore had to deal with it.“We were then met with quite a few obstacles when trying to reopen and we are sorry for the delay.“We were grateful to get a temporary solution put in place, as we appreciate there was quite a lot of angst over the loss in the area and totally understand how important local post offices are, particularly in Helmsley.” The Costcutter counter’s closure in 2022 coincided with the store ceasing its operations; both are now slated for reopening. While the permanent branch had offered cash banking services, the interim service at The Black Swan Hotel was accessible for only three days per week. Ian Murphy, the Post Office network provision lead, stated that the branch was acknowledged for providing essential services and fostering opportunities for social interaction among its users. He added: “We are delighted to be restoring a permanent post office to Helmsley as we know how important a post office is to a community.“We are very grateful for the owner of Black Swan Hotel to providing accommodation for the temporary Helmsley Post Office and for the temporary postmaster maintaining service to the community whilst we worked towards a permanent branch.”
