HelloFresh, a food delivery company, has revealed its intention to shut down its Nuneaton distribution facility, potentially impacting close to 900 employment opportunities. The company stated that this decision was not made without careful consideration and that it would initiate a consultation period with the staff involved. The Community Trade Union, representing the workforce, described the announcement as “dreadful” and asserted that employees merited improved treatment. This development follows a protest earlier this month by warehouse personnel, which occurred after 79 workers were terminated. Union representatives alleged that these dismissals resulted from complaints regarding working conditions, specifically mentioning toilet break policies. HelloFresh refuted these allegations, stating that staff were dismissed due to “serious breaches of employment terms.” On Wednesday, the company informed the BBC that it is evaluating its operational framework to ensure sustainable practices and the provision of the “best possible product” to its clientele. It indicated that most employees would be presented with opportunities for redeployment to its facilities in Derby and Banbury, subject to their interest. The company further explained that transitioning to a “two-site model” would contribute to waste reduction and a lower carbon footprint, alongside providing customers with personalisation options. The Nuneaton location is slated to continue operations until at least mid-2025 under this proposal. A statement from HelloFresh conveyed: “We know how unsettling this can be for our employees who we are supporting throughout the consultation process.” It continued: “If the proposal is accepted, we will prioritise redeployment opportunities within the business and look to offer incentives to employees who stay with us until the site eventually closes. The planned closure of the site is no reflection on the performance of the local team and we are grateful for their hard work and commitment.” Gavin Miller of Community stated: “It has been brought to our attention that HelloFresh intends to close its Nuneaton distribution centre next May. This is dreadful news for everyone who works on site, this workforce deserves better and Community will be challenging the company to prove the merits of their proposal and demonstrate that they have considered all viable alternatives.” He added: “Community will be representing and supporting our members at HelloFresh through this difficult time – they will receive the full backing of their union.” Jodie Gosling, the Member of Parliament for Nuneaton, commented that any reduction in local employment was “concerning.” She affirmed: “I will be working with affected staff, Community union and the company to explore mitigations and alternatives to this announcement.” Furthermore, she urged: “I urge any constituents who have been affected by this development to reach out to my office.” Readers can follow BBC Coventry & Warwickshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
