An alert regarding pumpkin disposal and its potential danger to hedgehogs has been issued by wildlife specialists. The Cornwall Wildlife Trust urged individuals to be “pumpkin aware” this Halloween season. According to the trust, “There is a popular misconception that leaving your pumpkin out for the wildlife is a great way to support nature.” They clarified, “However this is misleading and can actually lead to harm for hedgehog populations, which are already facing serious declines.” It was noted that discarded pumpkins have the potential to cause “stomach upsets” in hedgehogs, a condition that can lead to dehydration and, in severe cases, be fatal. “Even if the hog survives, at this time of year any illness threatens their chance of surviving winter hibernation,” the trust conveyed. It was suggested that pumpkin remnants could alternatively be placed directly into compost, used as a temporary birdfeeder, or potentially utilized by agricultural producers.
