Heckmondwike Grammar School, a state institution in West Yorkshire, has been granted two educational distinctions. The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2025 recognized the school as the premier state secondary school in the north of England. It also received the accolade for state secondary school of the year for academic excellence within the northern region. Headteacher Peter Roberts expressed his sentiments regarding the recognition, stating it was “beyond anything we could have hoped for and is a wonderful early Christmas present for the whole school community”. He further commented, “We are delighted to once again be recognised in the Sunday Times and this year absolutely thrilled to have received two awards.” Mr. Roberts added, “We knew our recent exam results at GCSE and A level were very strong indeed and so we were crossing our fingers we had been recognised.” Mr. Roberts also conveyed that the publication characterized the school as “head and shoulders above the other schools in the north of England,” and he extended his appreciation to the staff and students for their “incredible work.” Across other areas of Yorkshire, Fulford School in York was designated comprehensive school of the year in the north, while Hill House School in Doncaster was named North Independent Secondary School of the Year. Queen Ethelburga’s College in York secured the title of the North’s Independent Secondary School of the Year for Academic Excellence. Additionally, Carlton Junior and Infant School in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, was awarded North Primary School of the Year. The complete school league tables are published in The Times.
