Heart of Midlothian defender Stephen Kingsley sustained a hamstring injury during Sunday’s draw against Aberdeen, an incident that occurred while he was stretching to clear the ball. This injury necessitates surgery and could potentially sideline him for the remainder of the current season. Head coach Neil Critchley indicated that this situation will prompt him to seek reinforcements for the team’s defensive line during the upcoming January transfer window. While Critchley stated it is premature to confirm if Kingsley’s season has concluded, the 30-year-old first-team stalwart is expected to be unavailable for “months.” Critchley commented, “Stephen will be having surgery on his hamstring so he will face a significant period of time out, which is unfortunate for him and us. So that is bad news.” Kingsley previously missed 14 games for Hearts in 2022 due to recurring hamstring issues. Regarding the Scotland-capped left-back’s recent injury, Critchley reiterated, “It will be months. Whether that will be this season or going into next season, it’s too early to say because he still has to have the surgery. We will see how that goes but it will be a significant period of time, that’s for sure. It was an area of the pitch we were looking at anyway but with Stephen being out, it’s something now we have to consider.” Heart of Midlothian currently occupies the last position in the Scottish Premiership standings, having accumulated only 10 points from their initial 15 matches. The team is scheduled to play Dundee at home on Saturday. Despite their league position, Critchley maintained that the club is not facing a “crisis” regarding relegation concerns. He further stated, “We are not even halfway through the season and I know you like to use words like ‘crisis’ but I am just focusing on the next game.” Critchley continued, “We joined the club in the last two months, we have had improvements in terms of performances and now we have a period of games where we need to start putting some ‘Ws’ on the board.” He concluded by saying, “It’s an important period both domestically and in Europe. We have a chance to build and things could look significantly different in a few weeks’ time.”
