Louise Cunning, the headteacher of Sacred Heart Primary School, located in the Trench Road area of Londonderry’s Waterside, stated she was “saddened and disgusted” following a weekend break-in by vandals. She noted that this incident marked the most recent occurrence of such an event at the school. According to police reports, a classroom was ransacked and substantial damage was inflicted upon a memorial garden within the school grounds during the early hours of Sunday. Ms. Cunning indicated that the school intends to “be taking further action” to avert future incidents. Authorities were alerted to a burglary at the school, which is believed to have occurred around 05:00 GMT on Sunday. Ms. Cunning specified that the perpetrators had “specifically targeted the Year 1 area, causing damage within the classrooms and also to the main Year 1 doors, in their efforts to break into the school building.” She further reported that in recent weeks, a storage shed, as well as play resources and equipment, had sustained damage. Additionally, a bike shed was spray-painted, and “inappropriate messages” were inscribed on the school building. In a statement published on the school’s website, she conveyed: “We are committed to providing a safe environment for our students, and these senseless acts of vandalism are unacceptable. It is disheartening that our school, part of such a strong and supportive community, has now become a target. “Our children should not suffer from such actions.” The school has issued an appeal to nearby residents who might possess dashcam or doorbell footage to contact them. Concurrently, the police have requested that anyone with relevant information come forward. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved. The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites.
