A council has announced the approval of plans to establish 45 new places at a school for students with special educational needs (SEND), addressing an increasing demand. Springwater School, located in Starbeck, Harrogate, presently serves 112 SEND students ranging in age from two to 19 years old. North Yorkshire Council granted approval on Tuesday for a proposal to expand the school starting in September of the upcoming year, which includes the redevelopment of two existing buildings. Councillor Annabel Wilkinson, the executive member for education, learning, and skills, stated that the expanded SEND school provision is “much-needed and extremely welcome.” Council data indicates that the number of children in North Yorkshire holding education health and care plans (EHCPs) has risen by 95% since 2018, increasing from 2,606 to 5,100. Although most children’s requirements are fulfilled within their local mainstream schools, the council acknowledged a growing demand for specialized educational environments. Ms Wilkinson commented: “The expansion of Springwater School will help manage some of the school place pressures generated by the increase in the number of EHCPs funded by the local authority. It will also provide wider benefits in educating children closer to their local communities and reducing travel time and costs.” The council reported that the approval for the expansion followed a five-week consultation period, which garnered predominantly positive feedback. According to the approved plans, two buildings adjacent to the school are slated for redevelopment into new classrooms, changing facilities, and a kitchen.
