A full-sized Christmas tree, crafted entirely from crochet, is set to be exhibited in Hailsham to generate funds for a charity dedicated to assisting the homeless. Hailsham Library has been transformed into a festive, textile-rich environment by members of the Hailsham Ropemakers Women’s Institute, who dedicated almost a year to creating over 700 granny squares from donated wool. The deputy mayor is scheduled to officially unveil the tree on Friday afternoon. Proceeds from the display will benefit Warming Up the Homeless, an organization that offers outreach support, food, and welfare services to homeless individuals within the local area. Lyn Davenport, one of the contributors to the tree’s creation, shared with Radio Sussex: “In our WI we have a group which is the Knit and Natter group and we have been crocheting since January and we have probably produced over 700 squares.” She added, “It’s very colourful – it’s mainly green and red, but lots of white on it.” Davenport concluded, “It looks fantastic.” However, Davenport noted that the substantial crocheted tree serves a purpose beyond the festive season. She stated, “After Christmas we are taking it apart and we are making it into blankets for the homeless.”
