A gull is recuperating at an animal hospital in Leicestershire following an incident where it collided with a window, sustaining a wing injury. The Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital reported that the common gull is “doing well” after the incident that occurred in Leicester city centre. The male bird was admitted to the facility on Friday, November 29, having fractured the tip of its left wing during the impact with a factory window. Amy Blower, an animal care team leader at the hospital, stated that the bird’s wing had been bandaged and administered pain medication. Additionally, the bird has been undergoing treatment for gapeworm, an internal parasite. Ms. Blower commented: “We’ve taken the strapping off his wing, and it’s set in the right position, which is good.” She further explained, “He will go into a large flight enclosure over the next few days to let him build the muscles up in his wing.” Ms. Blower concluded, “We’ll make sure he can fly correctly, and then – fingers crossed – there will be a flock of gulls at the location he was found, and we can return him there.” The hospital noted that, contrary to their name, common gulls are rather uncommon and are included on the UK’s red list because of their declining populations. The hospital further mentioned that during winter, the UK experiences an increase in common gull numbers due to migration from mainland Europe.
