Individuals with concerns regarding the shift from the copper network to fibre broadband have received a recommendation to reach out to their respective service providers. This advice comes after Manx Telecom’s (MT) disclosure of its intention to initiate a copper network switch-off program in the upcoming year, with the complete phasing out of the infrastructure scheduled for 2029. Nevertheless, apprehensions have surfaced concerning the potential effects of this transition on vulnerable customers who rely on analogue carephones. Nicola Walton, representing adorn home care and carephone, stated that older devices utilizing a phone socket connection would cease to function once the switch-off occurs. Given that these devices are employed by individuals who experience falls at home, Ms Walton expressed her “concerned” that someone might be on the floor following a fall, activate the help button, and remain unaware that it would be inoperative. She advised that if carephones operate via phonelines, individuals “should be asking questions.” Hugo Van Zyl, MT’s chief technical officer, encouraged customers to get in touch with their service providers and specify any potential issues that might emerge, enabling them to facilitate the transition to fibre. He further stated that the company would collaborate with these providers to “ensure” that customers would not be deprived of “functional” broadband. Although the objective is to deploy fibre to “all premises on the island,” Mr. Van Zyl noted there would be “a couple of exceptions” owing to “geographic limitations.” For such cases, MT could implement mobile or radio solutions. He added that the purpose of the switch-off announcement was to migrate “as many customers as we can and to allow enough time to find solutions for the situations that are not as straight forward.” Customers who have not yet made the transition to fibre will receive notifications starting in early January, granting them a 12-month period before their copper network is deactivated. The phased program is set to commence in early 2026, targeting areas designated as zone one, specifically Kirk Michael, St John’s, and Foxdale.
