Residents in Guernsey are advised to verify their waste collection schedules during the upcoming Christmas season. The States of Guernsey indicated that the Christmas and New Year period represents its “busiest fortnight of the year” for waste management on the island, aiming to prevent any households from missing their designated collection times. According to the States, certain collections will be rescheduled, occurring either earlier or later than their regular times. The Household Waste & Recycling Centre situated at Longue Hougue will operate until 15:00 GMT on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. It will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, and January 2. Douglas Button, who serves as the waste minimisation and sustainability officer, stated that relevant information would be accessible via the States’ official website and its social media platforms. He commented: “This is the peak time of the year for waste and recycling, so we are encouraging everyone to be conscious of what they are producing, and reduce, reuse and recycle as much as they can.” He added: “We are really proud of islanders’ efforts and last year we recycled more than 68% of our household waste which is a phenomenal achievement and puts us up there with the very best.”
