The States of Guernsey has announced that the island’s minimum taxi fare will increase by almost 5% starting Monday. Environment and Infrastructure (E&I) confirmed an annual fare increase of 4.75% and modifications to the existing tariff structure. These adjustments will result in a two-mile daytime journey for up to four passengers costing £6.50, an increase of 40p. Similarly, a five-mile taxi trip taken during the evening or on public holidays will see a £1 increase, bringing its cost to £24.10. Deputy Adrian Gabriel, who serves as vice-president of E&I, stated that the committee had “taken feedback” into consideration. E&I indicated that the fare adjustments were determined by considering taxi operating expenses and the average earnings within the island. Gabriel clarified that while these fares represent the “absolute maximum” that companies are permitted to charge, they are “under no obligation” to implement the highest rate. He further mentioned that taxi companies have the option to provide reduced fares or negotiate specific arrangements with clients “to put themselves on a more competitive footing.” E&I reported that a recent public consultation regarding these changes received 13 responses, encompassing input from both individuals within the taxi industry and the general public. The committee approved two modifications to the tariff structure: initiating the higher evening rate at 18:00 GMT on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and raising the fare for trips involving seven passengers. Nevertheless, three other proposed changes were rejected after “listening to feedback” from the public consultation, due to concerns that these proposals might have led to a reduction in the number of taxi drivers willing to operate late at night.
