The States of Guernsey has launched an appeal for island residents to apply for the unpaid position of appropriate adult. This role is designed to offer support to vulnerable individuals during their interactions with law enforcement, correctional facilities, and the judicial system. The primary function of appropriate adults is to ensure the interests, rights, entitlements, and welfare of vulnerable adults and children are protected while they are in custody, and they may also assist the person during any court proceedings. These volunteers are responsible for ensuring that individuals in custody are treated fairly, with dignity and respect, which aims to enable their effective participation in the judicial process. Insp Lisa Hart, from Guernsey Police, stated: “Appropriate adults are an essential part of the criminal justice system there to support vulnerable islanders during what can be very difficult and overwhelming times. They act as a voice for the person interacting with law enforcement, while also providing important oversight for police, prison, and the courts, to ensure the fairness of the whole process. We’d encourage anyone with experience in working with vulnerable people that is looking to give back to the community to apply.” All prospective applicants must be over the age of 18 and will be required to undergo a basic police background check to confirm their suitability for the role. Although the position is voluntary, successful candidates may be reimbursed for any travel costs incurred. BBC Guernsey can be followed on X and Facebook.
