Following a residential fire in Guernsey, a fire service has released guidance concerning the secure operation of electric bikes. The fire and rescue service for the island reported that its personnel were dispatched to a residence situated in the Vale on Tuesday evening. A statement posted on Facebook by the service indicated: “A fire had started in the kitchen of a family home, and involved an electric bike. The actual cause of the fire is still under investigation.” No individuals sustained injuries during the incident. The service further commented: “Luckily the family had working smoke detection which raised the alarm and allowed them to escape without injury.” It also stated: “E-bikes offer an environmentally-friendly, affordable and convenient mode of transport, and while most e-bikes and their batteries are safe when used correctly, lithium-ion batteries can cause serious fires, particularly if they are of poor quality, damaged or not used properly.” Numerous fires originate from the use of incompatible components or the acquisition of faulty or inadequately manufactured parts, especially those procured from unauthorized online vendors.
