Guernsey Electricity (GE) has announced that customers utilizing pre-payment meters will maintain their electricity connection even if their credit depletes during the upcoming festive season. The utility provider stated it is extending its “friendly times” – designated protected periods for pay-as-you-go meters – to encompass the Christmas and New Year holidays. During these specified intervals, customers’ electricity supplies will not face automatic disconnection should they fail to top up their prepayment meter card via a local retailer. Guernsey Electricity clarified that any additional electricity consumed during these periods would be billed to customers when they next add credit to their accounts. The “friendly times” are scheduled to operate from 16:30 GMT on 24 December until 09:00 on 27 December, and subsequently from 16:30 on 31 December until 09:00 on 2 January. Pre-payment meters function on a pay-as-you-go model, necessitating regular top-ups. The company’s management indicated that these outlined periods are designed to ensure meters remain active if credit runs out or if topping up becomes unfeasible. Steven Parks, GE’s head of customer experience, advised pay-as-you-go customers to ensure their meters have sufficient credit in anticipation of the festive period. He commented: “We do appreciate it is a busy time and sometimes people can forget to top up their credit before the shops close.” Parks added: “With the flexibility of these friendly periods, our pay-as-you-go customers will be able to cook their Christmas dinner with the knowledge of not losing their supply, even if they have not been able to manage to top up beforehand.”
