A charitable organization in Guernsey, in collaboration with local enterprises, has distributed close to 100 Christmas meals to island residents who will be solitary on the holiday. The Guernsey Round Table established the Great Christmas Lunch initiative alongside Valderie Construction and Barras Retail Centre, offering complimentary pre-prepared Christmas lunches. Additional local businesses contributed ingredients and funds to this new initiative, which its organizers expressed hopes would be the initial effort in a continuing series. Oscar Webber, representing the charity, stated that participants also aimed to ensure individuals were not isolated and to disseminate “happiness on Christmas Day,” further remarking: “I think it’s important to give back as much as you can.” Throughout this week, volunteers have been engaged in preparing and cooking roast dinners and puddings. These meals, accompanied by a present, are scheduled for delivery on Christmas Eve, designed for recipients to warm up on Christmas Day. Chef Matthew Bamford explained his volunteering decision by citing his background in a large Lancashire family and the belief that “Christmas is important.” He stated: “I know there’s a lot of elderly people where their children have moved away, so they’re alone.” He added: “I’ve heard some stories from people ringing up and asking for them and it’s been an emotional time – it’s almost brought me to tears at times.” Paul Gilson, a recipient of one of the packages, described feeling “marvellous” about receiving his Christmas dinner delivery, further characterizing it as a “beautiful, nice gesture.” He expressed that he would “cherish” his parcel and anticipated opening his present.
