Guernsey Airport has installed a webcam to more effectively assess the demand for taxi services. Officials stated that this real-time camera is designed to count the number of individuals waiting for a taxi on the airport’s forecourt. The camera’s installation resulted from a collaboration between Traffic and Highway Services and the Guernsey Taxi Drivers Association, with the latter hosting the webcam on its website. A spokesperson for the States of Guernsey explained that the camera aims to assist taxi drivers by enabling them to respond more readily to periods of increased demand. Peter Blondel, chairman of the Guernsey Taxi Drivers Association, commented: “With the recent installation of the webcam at the airport, this is going to help the taxi drivers no end. They will be able to see what the state of play is regarding the number of people waiting for taxis at the airport and then know whether it’s going to be worth their while going back to the airport, as opposed to gambling that you’ll get a fare or not.” Access to the webcam is restricted to taxi drivers who have requested a log-in, and it cannot be viewed by members of the public, according to bosses.
