Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who has secured 18 trophies with the club, has indicated that another team might merit winning the Premier League given City’s prolonged success. The Blues have claimed six of the last seven Premier League championships, including four consecutive titles, but currently trail leaders Liverpool by five points after a 2-1 loss to Brighton. This marks the first instance in Guardiola’s 17-year managerial career that he has experienced four consecutive defeats (excluding shootouts). Furthermore, it is Manchester City’s initial four-game losing streak in 18 years, dating back to when Stuart Pearce held the managerial position. In recent weeks, the team has suffered defeats against Bournemouth and Brighton in the league, Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, and Sporting in the Champions League. Guardiola stated to BBC Match of the Day, “We have to try and win games again.” He continued, “Four [defeats] in a row. We have to change things quick. “The schedule becomes tough but it [winning games] is going to happen when the players come back.”” He further commented, “Maybe after seven years winning six Premier Leagues, maybe one year another team deserve it.” Manchester City continues to face significant injury challenges, with Ruben Dias, John Stones, Jeremy Doku, and Jack Grealish – despite his England call-up – all unavailable. Long-term absentees Rodri and Oscar Bobb are also out. Centre-backs Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji were only deemed fit enough to be substitutes, leading Guardiola to give 19-year-old Jahmai Simpson-Pusey his first Premier League start in defence. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, he remarked, “This is sport. Sport is not always sunrises. It is not always good moments. “Today in the press conference I was asked if it was the end of the era. I know people want that. I smell it for many, many years. “What we have done in these years, people have said it’s so difficult, but if somebody would like to beat us it is going to happen because in the next 50 years we’re not going to win all the Premier Leagues. It’s impossible.”” Guardiola had previously experienced three consecutive losses with Bayern Munich during the 2014-15 season, followed by a fourth defeat in a shootout. His most challenging period as City manager prior to this had involved three successive losses. When questioned about the team’s current performance streak, Guardiola informed Sky Sports, “Two in the Premier League. You have to count the victories and defeats, and we will win a lot. “If you have to count how many victories in a row, we are far away from that position.”” He stated that losing two league matches consecutively is “not nice,” but emphasized that City remains “not far away” from the top of the table, holding second place as they head into the international break. On Saturday, Erling Haaland scored his 12th Premier League goal of the season, giving City a first-half advantage against Brighton. The Blues largely controlled the first half, maintaining 67% possession and registering five shots on target compared to Brighton’s none. However, this dynamic reversed after halftime, with City managing only one shot on target while Brighton had four. City appeared sluggish for significant portions of the second half, as Brighton substitutes Joao Pedro and Matt O’Riley netted goals to secure the victory. This marked the first occasion since 2021 that City had lost a Premier League match after holding a lead at halftime. Former City defender Micah Richards commented on Match of the Day, stating, “The most defining thing for me is not pressing any more. They’re going as individuals.” He added, “When you lose the best midfielder in Europe [Rodri] you’re always going to have a strain on the team. But they are just too easy to play through at this moment in time.”” Guardiola further stated, “We are not able to do 90 minutes right now.” He continued, “We played a really good first half, but we were not able to sustain the rhythm in the second half. “We lost again so [we will] clear our heads [in the] international break and hopefully our players come back fit.”” During his news conference, Guardiola also remarked, “When the players come back, I don’t have any doubt that we will be back to our best.” Following the international break, City faces a challenging fixture list before Christmas, including matches against Tottenham, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Manchester United, and Aston Villa.
