Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has affirmed that he does not regret extending his contract with the club for an additional two years. This contract extension, which commits him until 2027, was made public on 21 November, following a period where his team had suffered four consecutive defeats. The expectation at the time was that Guardiola’s continued presence would provide stability during what was perceived as an exceptionally challenging period for the club. However, since the announcement, City has secured only one victory, a 2-0 triumph over Nottingham Forest. Their recent poor performance includes a 4-0 home loss to Tottenham, squandering a 3-0 advantage to draw 3-3 with Feyenoord, a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool, a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, and a 2-0 loss to Juventus on Wednesday, which has put their Champions League qualification prospects in jeopardy. With only a single win in their last 10 matches across all competitions, and with a Manchester derby against United scheduled for Sunday, Guardiola acknowledged that this period, which he described as the worst run of results in his managerial career, is impacting his sleep and diet. Nevertheless, the former manager of Barcelona and Bayern Munich firmly stated that he has no desire for an option to leave at the conclusion of the current season. When questioned about any regrets regarding his commitment to City for what could ultimately be 11 years, Guardiola responded: “Absolutely not,” adding, “I would not be able to sleep – even worse than now – if I thought I was leaving when the club is in this situation. Impossible.” He further commented, “They might sack me, that could happen. But leaving now, in this position? No chance.” It is evident that the Spanish coach harbors a strong sense of loyalty towards City’s Abu Dhabi ownership. This loyalty appears to be mutual, considering Guardiola has secured an impressive 18 trophies for the club since his arrival from Bayern in 2016. Despite having achieved the highly sought-after Champions League title as part of a historic Treble in 2023, Guardiola acknowledges that his legacy is firmly established and that he no longer has significant targets motivating him. Nevertheless, the 53-year-old manager continues to exhibit considerable drive and takes great pride in performing his role to the highest possible standard. His immediate objective is to restore City’s position at the pinnacle of both domestic and European football. Guardiola further stated: “What we have done, we have done. The satisfaction to do it is done. It is accomplished. The way we have played, the numbers, everything. Always it will remain. But now, in this situation, I could not leave.” He also mentioned: “There are many things we have to do; go into the market at the right moment, maybe in winter or maybe the other one, or the other one, to make the squad bigger, so they compete with each other to make the players better.” Guardiola continued: “Nothing is eternal. You have to be honest. If I am losing and losing and losing, more and more, in the end I say, ‘guys, you have to get someone else to fix this’.” He concluded by saying: “But I don’t feel that. I don’t know at [another] big club, if you play 10 games and lose seven if they have the confidence I have. But the club knows what we have done in the past and that the situation is exceptional for many reasons.” Post navigation Hertfordshire non-league football clubs appeal for aid following storm damage Skier Kirsty Muir Anticipates Stronger Return After Year-Long Injury Recovery
