A 50m-high (164ft) Ferris wheel situated on the seafront, offering views along the Norfolk coastline, has received approval to continue operating for an additional two years. The attraction, approximately one-third the size of the London Eye, was initially installed as a temporary fixture on Great Yarmouth’s Golden Mile in 2021. Great Yarmouth Borough Council granted the extension on Wednesday, ensuring the large wheel’s presence at the seafront until February 2027. Asa Morrison, chief executive of Visit Great Yarmouth, commented, “The seafront is forever changing, ever reinventing itself, ever moving… it [the Ferris wheel] can compliment all the other assets we’ve got.” The attraction is presently undergoing a “winterisation” period. Typically, however, it provides visitors with panoramic views stretching north to Hemsby and Winterton, south to Gorleston and Lowestoft in Suffolk, and inland across a section of The Broads. Mr. Morrison also noted its visibility to those approaching Yarmouth via the Acle Straight road. He stated, “It dominates the seafront in terms of something rather unique and something rather special… the views are striking,” adding, “One of the beauties of Great Yarmouth is because we’re not particularly mountainous, your views are uninterrupted.” Its initial installation took place on the council-owned South Beach Gardens, incurring “no cost” to the local authority, as the wheel was leased from a private company.
