The Great Western Hospital Trust has introduced its inaugural emergency facility specifically for children. The Children’s Emergency Unit (CEU) at Great Western Hospital in Swindon commenced operations on Wednesday, following the launch of the hospital’s new Emergency Department. The CEU is equipped with 13 cubicles, two high acuity bays designed for more intensive patient monitoring, and a dedicated resuscitation bay. According to the trust, consideration has been given to ensuring patient comfort, with amenities such as a baby and breastfeeding room, a sensory play room, and a wellbeing room for younger patients experiencing mental health crises. The hospital previously inaugurated its expanded Emergency Department earlier this year, an investment totaling £33.5m. Hospital management expressed hopes that this expansion would contribute to reducing waiting times and enhancing the overall patient experience. This facility connects with its Urgent Treatment Centre, which was established two years prior at a cost of £15m.
