Initiatives to employ hundreds of examiners with the goal of reducing escalating waiting periods for driving tests have been met with a guarded reception from an MP. Liberal Democrat Helen Morgan, who serves as the representative for North Shropshire, has advocated on this matter, describing it as a significant challenge within her constituency. It was believed to be affecting numerous young individuals who are prepared to take their test but face delays, in some instances, for up to six months. The government acknowledged the “huge” backlog and stated that its recruitment campaign aims to decrease waiting times to seven weeks by December next year. Morgan has expressed concern regarding the closure of The Lodge test centre within her constituency, which ceased operations in April 2022 as a cost-cutting measure. There had been proposals to establish a new facility within parts of the Whitchurch Civic Centre, but this plan was abandoned due to building safety concerns. The situation was exacerbated by “inadequate” bus services, disproportionately impacting young people, she noted. “The only way really to get about is by car,” she added. “If you’re ploughing all that money and time into learning to drive and you’ve got to wait another five or six months to get your test that’s not acceptable.” Morgan further stated that the issues stemmed from challenges in recruitment and retention, combined with a “lack of interest” in rural areas. She endorsed the initiatives proposed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency but emphasized the need for the government to prioritize rural areas alongside cities. “I hope we get some rural focus and some absolute results for people who want to get their driving test sorted out.” In December, a driving instructor from Ludlow reported being contacted by candidates from locations as distant as Essex and Edinburgh. A spokesperson for the DVSA indicated that the new provisions would contribute to a more equitable driving test reservation process for learners.
