New funding has been allocated to two East Midlands councils to address homelessness. Leicester City Council is set to receive £360,000, while Nottingham City Council will obtain £210,000. According to the government, this funding is part of the £5 million Emergency Accommodation Reduction Pilots program, designed to “test innovative approaches and kickstart new initiatives”. This initiative will collaborate with 20 local councils, including Leicester and Nottingham, which currently have the highest reliance on bed and breakfast accommodation for homeless families. The aim is to implement specialized strategies to decrease the utilization of emergency housing. The government highlights that the number of families residing in such accommodations nationwide has almost doubled over the past three years. These options offer limited stability and represent some of the most costly provisions for local authorities. Homelessness minister Rushanara Ali expressed hope that her department’s team of experts would engage with Leicester and the other 19 recipient councils “to identify solutions which work for their local circumstances and share the learning across the country”.
